Water is essential for life and it’s essential for us to drink clean, pure water for our health and wellbeing. Whether you’re drinking town water or rainwater, both sources are at risk of contamination of various types.
Town water obviously is treated with chemicals to make it “safe” for consumption, but it is also exposed to metals such as iron, copper, lead and aluminium. While it is rare, there is also the risk of contaminations of bacteria such as e-coli, cryptosporidium or giardia.
Even rainwater collected in tanks is exposed to particulates, sometimes pesticide residue and can occasionally harbour bacteria, depending on the location and circumstances in which the system is operating.
The risks implied by potentially contaminated water can be largely mitigated by filtering water. There are a number of filtering methods that provide different levels of protection and they vary greatly in complexity, size and cost. Our preferred system is the simple and beautiful stoneware benchtop water filter, utilising a ceramic filter candle.
This is a completely passive and easily portable system, requiring no plumbing and no power to achieve a very high level of protection from contaminants.
The filters we supply with our stoneware water filters have a 1 micron porosity and are filled with activated carbon that absorbs chlorine and other chemicals, metals, sediment, taste and odour. A colloidal silver coating kills bacteria such as giardia and cryptosporidium. In fact, the filter has been tested by Ecoscience and the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories and results have shown that it removes 86% of cadmium and at least 97% of
- bacteria and other organic compounds
The stoneware filters themselves are crafted by a local artisan and are an attractive addition to the home. They are finished in a crystalline glaze process and are generally available in cobalt blue, green and white. They also naturally cool the water without the use of power, ensuring refreshing, clean water is always available.
Candles generally last around 6 months, depending on consumption, and may require some easy maintenance to ensure maximum efficiency, if your water supply is particularly contaminated.
